Eylie Mateer

Eylie and her partner Colin lived on the farm as garden interns in 2000. They returned to the farm as the gardeners in 2002. They now live in Ottawa with their two children Shaela and James. This is how Eylie remembers her time at Windhorse Farm.

“I remember Windhorse Farm for its beauty and its community and its hard work.   I miss all of these things, and more.  I miss:

The softness of the forest floor when walking the cows to pasture. The heat and steam from turning of the compost in the cool early morning. Walking up the hill at night by moonlight. Good food and farmers markets. Making bouquets with Margaret. Swimming in river with the eels.Square dancing in celebration of WHF’s 10 years. Fireside stories with Brian. Jim’s quirky poems and jokes. Margaret’s laughter. The hours spent with my hands in the dirt with friends. Bathing at the pond and even the lack of electricity and plumbing!

At this old Farm that lies next to the river surrounded with wildly peaceful gardens and magical forests I learned the lust of lush earth and rain, the love of compost and dirt and the truth of friendship.”
